The Elastic Properties of Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) & Woven Roving (WR)

Elastic Properties of Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) & Woven Roving (WR)

The elastic properties of 450 gsm chopped strand mat (CSM) and 800 gsm woven roving (WR) strengthened polyester laminae were by experimentation determined using the tensile and also the rail shear tests.

It was found that the CSM laminae didn't accommodates the (general) assumption of thwartwise isotropy; the Young's moduli (E) measured in 2 reciprocally perpendicular directions were found to differ by eighteen p.c. A distinction of twenty seven p.c within the E of the 2 (mutually perpendicular) principal material directions of the WR can be partly explained in terms of the degree fraction of fibres in these directions.

The elastic properties of each styles of laminae were foreseen from the resin and fibre properties and therefore the fibre volume fraction using equations recommended by Hull for the CSM and an analysis of Ishikawa for the WR. Agreement between the expected and experimental values was affordable to good.
