Description of the Manufacture of Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat

 Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat is an unwoven fabric consisting of strands chopped into 25-50 mm lengths, deposited at random in a horizontal plane, and held together by means of a suitable adhesive. Adhesives are of two powdered polyesters.  While the physical properties of composites are governed by the composition of the fiber size, the choice and quantity of adhesive is mainly responsible for the handling and moulding properties or the mat.

    

     The starting materials for chopped strand mats are glass fiber manufacturers use cakes entirely, although some often use roving, in part to save floor space.

    Very important for the quality of the mat is the good sizing of the fibers to give a good chopping characteristic and low static-electrical load.

Creel Frame

     The spincake bobbins are placed in suitable number on the creel frames. Frames these creels the fiber cake are un-winded, the cake creel area should be in an air conditioning room with a reality humidity of 82-90 % 

Feeding an Cutting Device

     Through the feeding rolls the strand are drawn from the cakes. 

     To each of the cutters will be conveyed a partial of the total number of bobbins.

Forming Section

     The mat is formed by cutting a great number of strands through cutting devices which are disposed at equal distance on the top of the forming chamber. Each device is furnished with a motor with variable speed. the cutting devices are controlled independently, that allows an uniform distribution of the fibers. Inside the forming chamber there are strands dispersers with air support.

     A section box below the wire mesh belt sucks the strand onto the belt. 

     The exhaust air is cleaned by filters.
